A silly Hida Defender vs. Kenshinzen question There is still some debate about how Hida Defender works, but for this question, we'll assume that Rank 1 lets the HD choose Willpower as the Trait that his opponent will Focus with.
You always choose which Trait you wish to use in an Iaijutsu duel (Agility, Void, or Reflexes) instead of allowing your opponent to choose.Since the Kenshinzen doesn't give their opponent the chance to choose their Trait at all, it stands to reason that Kenshinzen trumps HD Rank 1. While there is no official support for this interpretation, we'll assume it is so for the question.
My question is this: can the Kenshinzen choose his own Willpower to Focus with, and why? I know he's not the one with the ability (to choose Willpower), but he makes the choice that his opponent normally would, and that opponent (a HD) could have chosen Willpower. On the other hand, the available Trait choices are made clear in their Technique, separate from the standard choices in the duel (the fact that they coincide may or may not be irrelevant).
If he cannot choose his own Willpower, is it because he doesn't get to steal the "benefit" of HD, or is it because his Technique prohibits him from choosing Willpower by not listing that Trait?
It doesn't really matter, obviously, but I'd like to know. Maybe it will even establish a precedent to use in the event that other abilities do similar things in the future.

Not to hijack this thread, but that doesn't stand to reason at all. Normally, the opponent gets to choose which Trait will be used - standard rules. kenshinzen 2 is a Technique, which means it can trump the standard rules - that's what Techniques do. But HD 1 is also a Technique, which means it has the same level of authority, so to speak. Very basically put, Kenshinzen 2 says A gets to choose while HD 1 says B gets to choose. HD 1 doesn't say "add Willpower and Strength to the list of possible choices for Focus Trait", it says "the HD gets to choose Willpower or Strength instead of Agility, Reflexes or Void" - by the above interpretation, anyway, which I don't support.

He can't, for *both* reasons. Doesn't have to be one or the other.
