An interesting piece of Duelling Cheese. Before anyone says it - Yes, Rank 8 Characters are scary.
Ultimate duellist...
Rank 5 Shiba/rank 3 Mirumoto.
1st focus: Blow 5 void to reduce number of times your opponent can focus by 10.
If they can still focus ( due to High void and skills etc) by spending void, then you will make a contested void roll to gain your void back...BAM.
When they run out of focuses, kill them.

This tactic solely relies on the fact that the Shiba has a higher void rank and/or void left. Generally, this cheese will take, but people like Toshimoko (high void ranks) with the Kenshinzan can pawn you. They can defeat the contested roll, gain the "forever claimed useless" free focuses from Kakita Bushi, and use their own void points to get focuses. Generally, duels don't get past 5-6 focuses for each duelist anyhow. But I must say the build is highly effective, if you could pull it off with roleplaying.
Without further ado, I take my hat off for you, sir! 8)

We ARE talking about a Rank 5 Shiba Bushi here :) , who is a "idjit" if they haven't pumped their void ring through the roof already. I would expect at least a void of 6.

With roleplaying? It is the natural path of progression for Tonbo bushi.
Train with Shiba until school is complete. Then spend time learning from the other neighbour you have. Both all spiritual like folk.

Which one wonders why the Shiba aren't already considered one of the best duelists already.

Because they are humble. The shiba will back down to avoid fights becuase their charge is more important than their glory or honour.
Mechanically they rock though.

That assumes every Shiba follows the stereotype. Not all Kakita Bushi and Ronin Duelists are arrogant asses like they are sometimes portrayed or Togashi monks are contemplative monks that levitate off the ground and stay indoors. Rokugan is a varied lot, but, yes, I agree with you in theory.
Mechanically they rock though.
Yes, they do.

Sorry I haven't been in in a while. I've been busy. Haven't had much time to do on forums other than lurk.
As for this combo, It doesn't work. Shiba Bushi can only spend multiple Void on ACTIONS. As the game currently works, it's debatable whether a Focus is even an action, but regardless of that the Mirumoto 3 technique is not an action, rather it is a triggered expendature in response to a successful focus. Therefore the Shiba 1 Technique does not work. You can force the opponent to lose 2 fouceses for the cost of your one Void using the rank 5 Shiba technique(which is good in and of itself), but you can not blow all of your Void at once.
This is actually a more void effecient version of what I have been thinking about for using the Mirumoto 3 techniques. I was trying to find a way to make use of that technique, and I just came up with the(easier to rationalize) Swordsmaster 5/M. Bushi 3 combo. As both rank 3 techs trigger off of one focus. More expensive to use than your combo, but with the same results. Instead of regaining VOid as they spend it you can just use the Rank 5 Dragon Kata to gain an additional 3 Void and have some extra void to spare as well.

The duelling rules on page 170 state that the awareness roll is made, then you may bow out before any other action. This implies that focusing is an action, even if it isn't a listed combat action. :?
If focusing IS an action, then when performing it, you may spend any number of void points. To be really pedantic, it doesn't say you must spend it on the action you are performing. :P
Even if it did, the rank 3 mirumoto is not in response to a successful focus, it is an option when you choose to focus, as in - when you choose to perform this action, there is an additional thing you may do with your void.

If focusing is an action (which from my memory Shawn and Rich has said it is NOT), your could spend 2 void and focus an extra time and do all sorts of weird things.
Also:
At this point we don’t even know what an action is because would penalties apply to actions, but reactive rolls make on other’s turns are not actions for you and thus a Shiba cannot spend extra void on them and lots of other inconsistent things.
Focuses are not “Actions” in the simple, complex, attack, move, ect sort fo way. They are a skill roll, and I think errataing the Shiba is the easier solution as well as some other fixes to things that refer to “actions” when the designers meant “skill rolls”.

They stated that it wasn't a combat action, in the Complex or Simple or Attack kind of way. Nothing about non-skirmish actions at all.

These aren't combat actions, but the definition of "Action" in and out of combat is half english, half ruleset, and altogether confusing.

If you erratta the Shiba to mean Skill Rolls, then that would solve a lot of problems. The 2 for 1 void effect still meshes nicely with the Mirumoto Bushi though. ;)
