Borrow the Next Breath - cheeseburger? My 110xp build Mirumoto rank 2 tore apart a rank 5 hida (earth 5 str 5 TNTBH 51) using borrow the next breath and a good initiative roll.
The Hida was possessed and couldnt use void therefore limiting use of the rank 2, but had carapce 3 instead.
Borrow the next breath managed to turn a strong two attacks worth 50 odd damage into a strong 5 attacks worth 150, enough to kill.
Broken?

Has there been a clarification that this kata allows you to spend multiple VP to gain multiple extra attacks? I always interpreted it as allowing you to gain one and only one extra attack per opponent already attacked that round. Still very good for a rank 2/3 kata, but it doesn't let you make 5 attacks per round against the same opponent at IR 2.

What? A Spirit or Shuiten Doji Possesed him?

Well I canot see much that woudl say this was illegal, but we can look at other "spends a void for X effect" effect and see if such things can be used more then once a round.
Broken?
Probably not seeing as I know Chuckles has played a Deathseeker that have done similar feats without this kata.
It would make the Tournament of Thunder much more nasty.

I think there was, but it'll take some hunting to find.

Shinjitsu's jobber jabber had me convinced that the section on page 192 referring to void use in Kata only applied to the "void use" section of kata
On rereading the section it applies to all of the description of kata (I don't have my book handy for a quote) Thus with borrowing the next breath no matter how many void you spend you can only get one extra attack per opponent
Still strong, up to doubling your attacks... but not insane
What gets me though is that you can de-activate the kata on your turn... and thus be able to attack.
Logic as follows
Use borrowing the next breath, next round forced into full attack and cannot attack
Start of next action, posture declared = full attack
Then kata use= cancel borrow the next breath
The restriction no longer applies thus I can attack
Heck if you can order the start of turn effects then you might not even be forced into full attack.. but I'm pretty sure postures come first

An old post by Rich Wulf seems to indicate that kata penalties can outlast the duration of the kata, but as with many of Rich Wulf's posts this my not be particularlly helpful or current enough. Here is the old post:
Standing on the Heavens is an example of a kata whose penalty outlasts its duration. The rest of the day is the rest of the day whether the kata is on or not.

The restriction isn't the result of the kata being active. It's the result of having used it. Disactivating doesn't change the fact that you did use it, so the restriction still applies.

What text is this? I remember reading something like this, but I do not have my book with me at this time.

I agree with Kakita Seigi and Toku Yojiro. The Full Attack Posture and inability to attack are not conditions of having the kata active, but rather effects of having used the kata per Rich’s post.

What text is this? I remember reading something like this, but I do not have my book with me at this time.
It says on pg. 192: "Each kata details how Void Points may be spent to affect the mechanics of the kata, if at all. These effects are not cumulative - if a kata says a character may spend a Void Point to roll an additional damage die while using the kata, he may not spend two Void Points to roll two additional dice."

Right, but the Mirumoto is NOT spending multiple void in reaction to the same attack. Each attack is a separate trigger. If this kata resets each round, why can’t it reset after each attack.
I attack my opponent. I spend a void to use the kata to get an extra attack. I now made an attack and I trigger the kata again this round. I did not spend two void in reaction to the same trigger.
If the Mirumoto can’t use this kata more then once a round, then all kata that require spending of void can only be used once per round and thus a kata that let you spend a void to gain X on an attack could only be used once per round on one attack only.

I wasn't arguing that point at all. I was just posting the relevant information when you asked what pg. 192 refered to. I lean personally toward the idea that a character can trigger their kata anytime the kata says it can, because it makes the clause on the Unyielding Fury kata relevant. Unfortunately, even that is sketchy argument because we know techniques like the Hida Bushi Rank 2 can sometimes be funky and throw monkey wrenches into interpretations of the RAW.

Right. I have no doubt I'll end up errataing this kata so it can only be used X times a round. For now however, can anyone see anything that prevents this kata from being used after each of the Mirumoto normal attackers, not to even mention it triggering of it';s own attacks?

good. :-) cos dodging penalties is dodgy.

There is a condition for it's use(You may only use it on someone you have already attacked this round), but it is not a trigger. In order for it to be a trigger it would have to say something like "whenever you attack an opponent you may spend a Void to get an extra attack." The difference being that (to paraphrase the rule) "you may only attack an opponent you have previously attacked", allows you to use it multiple times(assuming multiple uses of a kata in a round is legal in any case) on the same opponent provided you have at least attacked them once this round.
I don't think that this is a terrible problem as this kata essentially has similar limitations tp the Extra Attack manuever. This being that if you kill your opponent with your regular attack you cant use the kata to attack someone else. Basically you can keep trying to hit someone that you have a hard time hitting, or you can make sure someone you only wounded will die. This is quite a powerful kata in a one on one situation, however any Bushi that uses this in anything other than a small skirmish is almost assuredly going to die from its drawbacks.
