I broke "Fall Before the Master" Kiho
I considered posting this on the AEG forums, but after reading a very good argument against going too technical there (and I admit, nitpicking), I decided to post this here instead. So, this dragon Earth Kiho from AotD says, "before you enter a duel" and the effects last "until the end of the duel" (or something to that effect, I don't have the book with me right now). I've read and re-read the kiho, and by the RAW, there is nothing to prevent me from challenging a friend to a duel, decide that we will resolve this duel in, say, 10 years, and activate the kiho. 10 years before the duel is stil before the duel, right? Now the +1 to traits and void will remain until that duel is over, which will be in 10 years. Pretty cool, huh? And of course, this assumes that I have to know for sure that a duel is coming. By the RAW, I could also activate the kiho in advance, just in case... A Void Point well spent if you ask me. Mike

Technically, I believe you can activate it only just before making the roll for the show me your stance part of a duel ...

I'm sure that's the intent, but it's not written like that. It just says "before the duel".

I'm sure that's the intent, but it's not written like that. It just says "before the duel".You also spend Void to enhance a roll before you make a roll. That doesn't mean that you can spend the remainder of your Void everyday so that you can gain the benefits of a Void enhancement 5 years down the road. Unless written in a fashion such as "at any time prior" then the default defintition of before for game mechanics means immediately before. There are probably dozens of other mechanics that woud fall apart if one tried to use this train of thought applied to them.

There are probably dozens of other mechanics that woud fall apart if one tried to use this train of thought applied to them. Really? I have the find them all then :D Seriously, if instead of "before entering" they had written "when entering", none of this nonsense would be possible. Mike

I've read and re-read the kiho, and by the RAW, there is nothing to prevent me from challenging a friend to a duel, decide that we will resolve this duel in, say, 10 years, and activate the kiho. 10 years before the duel is stil before the duel, right? And what if my opponent died of a heart attack after the Awareness roll? Duels don't end until either one side backs out or one side strikes the other, with their sword. My kiho is active for eternity because the duel never ended, right? This kind of rules lawyering is very troublesome for l5r because the wording is not very precise.
