Could you give me some examples of how the Horsemanship skill could be used in mounted combat?Without the Horsemanship skill, you must use a Complex Action for making unskilled Horsemanship rolls and thus cannot normally Attack. If you have Horsemenship at 1 or more, then you do not normally need to make rolls at all to control horse in combat. When doing so, you may use your horse’s movement instead of your own in combat. While mounted on a Rokugani Steed and with Horsemanship of 1, the steeds movement is 60 feet per round (Water 3 x2 <horse> x10 <movement>) and thus your effective movement for the round is 60’. You could use your one free Simple Action half move 30 and make a normal attack using the Attack Action. You could also draw your weapon with your Simple Action, then use the movement in the Attack Action to half move a total of up to 30’ and then attack. You could even use the movement in the Attack Action to move 60’ and attack if you make a Raise. You cannot use the Full Attack Posture while Mounted unless you have Horsemenship 3 or higher. These rules are presented on in the Third Edition Main rules page 102 under the Horsemanship skill and on page 168 under the “Ride a Horse” Action.
Do you recieve additional dice for charging (as calvary are known to do) vs just fighting horse to soldier? There is no special benefit to attack while mounted, but your GM may give you the Higher Ground Bonus (page 169) of -2 TN to your Ranged and Melee attacks when attacking a non-mounted foe and give the non-mounted foe +2 TN to their own Ranged and Melee attacks.
Archery while mounted imposes a +10 TN, yet the Daikyu bow reduces penalties for range by +10. It says "range penalties", but the +10 TN on horseback is listed under "range", even though it isn't a -range- effect that is imposing the penalty. So does this mean the penalty and benefit are washed out? Does the benefit ONLY apply to range increment penalties? They are separate penalties and bonuses. The +10 penalty for firing on horseback is separate from the +10 penalty from firing on horse back listed for the Hankyu and yumi. They are all also not range penalties. The Daikyu also does not reduce the range “penalty” for point black from +0 to -10. To reduce the +10 penalty from firing from horseback you need the Horse Archery Emphasis for Kyujutsu. This emphasis ability does NOT remove the specific +10 penalties for firing from horseback that the hankyu and yumi have.
How about mass combat? Any special considerations for calvary units, or mounted archers?Mass Combat uses the Mass Combat rules starting on page 204. They only listed bonus or penalty for Calvary in mass battles is -3 for raining on the field to the general’s Mass Battle roll. If a Heroic opportunity results in a skirmish, the same rules for being mounted as I described above apply.
