Rokugani Literature 101
Sorry if this belongs in another forum. What are the famous books of Rokugan? My (very short) list so far: Articles of Heaven by Seppun Hanako (laws and Articles detailing the proper etiquette and behavior for rulers and those in authority) Confessions of an Opium Eater by Shiba Shanagon, but published anonymously Lies - by Bayushi Tangen (sort of a Machiavellian anti-Tao; describes the ugly realities of life) Little Truths - by Bayushi Tangen (writings similar to Lies; may or may not be related) by Doji Hatsu and Soshi Saibankan The journal of Kitsuki Kaagi (notes and thoughts related to conducting an investigation) Kawaru by Isawa Teruyo Leadership by Akodo "One-Eye" (a book of military leadership and strategy written by the founder of the Lion Clan) Niten by Mirumoto Hojatsu (a book of swordsmanship and strategy written by a member of the Dragon Clan) The research notes of Kuni Mokuna (notes on the Shadowlands, creatures of the Shadowlands and the Taint) The Book of Sun Tao by Sun Tao (a book of military strategy written by a Ronin) The Sword by Kakita (a book of swordsmanship and Iaijutsu written by the founder of the Kakita school) The Subtlety of Court by Otomo Madoko (a book of courtly strategy) The Tao of Shinsei transcribed by Shiba but was a conversation between Hantei and Shinsei (a religious text and a general "guide" to Enlightenment) Winter by Kakita Ryoku (a novel describing the way of life for the various clans)

Matsu Kiyohara- 01-18-2007

hey, i posted it above, but you missed it: 'Confessions of an Opium Eater'; by Shiba Shanagon, but published anonymously http://l5r.wikicities.com/wiki/Literature Has the list of all literature currently added to the Wiki (with sources..) Might be one or two you haven't thought of, and you've probably got some we don't... Lies is stated several places in Way of the Scorpion to be by Bayushi Tangen (not the Black Sword of Bitter Lies founder - he named himself after the author). Shinriku (little truths), was meant as a compaion piece. It has been added to by several Scorp Champions throughout the years. Also, though "well known" it's not, Bearers of Jade was in-game collected by the ronin Seikansha, for Isawa Tadaka. Other books: Meigumado, by Ide Tadahito, is quoted in Bearers, detailing an incident at a rare Winter Court at Kyuden Hida, in Hantei 31's reign. Letters from the Wall, by Kakita Nanimaru, collects the letters of a Crane stationed for a year at the Kaiu Wall. Masiko, by Hida Nareiko. A fictionalized tale of the death of Hida's first wife, who committed Jigai to keep from being taken by the Shadowlands. Specifically mentioned as being famous, but utterly ignored in Crab lands, due to Hida's decree that his first wife's name should never be mentioned again. Burning Stones by Asako Seisha. Fictionalizing of a the fall to Maho and cleansing of an Isawa temple. Persistence by Ujina (I thing?), a retired Hida Samurai. A book about Hida Kisada. Reportedly brough tears to Hida O-Ushi's eyes, and caused her to name the monk as one of the Crab's greatest treasures. The Collected Letters of Iuchi Xien. The letters of a Unicorn diplomat to the Imperial court. Among other things, describes the first meeting of Doji Hoturi and (then) Shosuro Kachiko. Bayushi's Promise, by Bayushi Namaru. A novel about Bayushi's refusal to send Shosuro at the Day of Thunder, her return and subsequent death. A Treatise on the Reserach and Methology of Kuni Mokuna, by Daidoji Nazoko, detailing the author's years as the Kuni's apprentice and companion In addition, though outside what you asked, a few plays. Closing Night, by Hiruma Naduko, detailing the fall of Hiruma Castle to the Horde. Virtue by Ikoma Jiju, detailing the evils of "lust, vengeance and the Crane..." Doji Nashiko, a skilled if unattractive woman, petiotions for the hand of the Emerald Champion, gets turned down in favor of beauty, and gains beauty and revege through a pact with Fu Leng. Mercy, by Matsu Sinoku. Details the plots and murders between a Matsu and his unaithful Scorpion wife, written so the wife is the hero. Only played once, due to the Lion champion killing the author and actors immideately following the play, and forbidding the play from ever be set up again. Only one copy survived. Hope this helps. Persistance by Hida Unari (Biography of the rise, fall, and ultimate sacrifice of Hida Kisada.) Updated list for those who care by Doji Hatsu and Soshi Saibankan That would be the Esmerald Magistrate's Charter, I believe. The Book of Sun Tao by Sun Tao (a book of military strategy written by a Ronin) Those are actually seven different books. Only the Dragon, Scorpion and Imperial have been recovered however. The Tao of Shinsei transcribed by Shiba but was a conversation between Hantei and Shinsei (a religious text and a general "guide" to Enlightenment) Don't forget the New Tao, scribed from the conversation between Toturi and the Hooded Ronin after the Day of Thunder by Isawa Osugi (and subtly filled with Kolat ideology). Some others who may count as books: Akodo's Bushido, Kuni Visten's journal and Kuni Yori's Burning Word. I hear that the book Dreams and Follies, written in 1025 (by a coven of bog hags), was a favourite of the Court for some time. Aside of that, Kuni Yori's Oaths and Betrayals is a best-seller in the south. Bushido, as penned by Akodo-kami, has attained some popularity with a certain class of Rokugani. Guwahime's Fables are a series of children's stories written by Bayushi Guwahime, the youngest daughter of Shosuro Ideme. The most famous of the tales are about a little Scorpion and her encounters with the various totem animals of the other Great Clans.
