School Skills? I am currently going through the main rules looking for as definition of "school skills".As far as I know, the term School Skills is never defined in the RAW. However, the logical definition would be 'Skills that are learned during character creation from the list of skills given for a specific school and not skills that are bough to expand this list using character or experirnce points.'
In the case of the Ruby Dojo technique, I would take this to mean a skill that was taught by the School the character trained in before he went on to join the Ruby Dojo.
Or you could take it to mean any skills that a prerequisites for the Advanced School. Which also makes sense.
This is my general belief as well, but causes a few complicatiosn when multiple schooling into a differant school (like the ikoma soymaster) who have "school skills".
I have been of the opinion that when a tech refers to "school skills", it refers to the skills the school grants. If you multiple School into a School, the School skills are only the descrite skills and NOT "any X". This is because when Multiple Schooling, you need to take all the schools skills of the new school, but do not need to buy any "any x" skills".

On my point, schools skills are all the non-variable skills of the school, and for an advanced school the skills of school you was following before entering the advanced school.
Techniques using schools skills then refer only to the school skills of the school in question, not of all the schools you could have followed.

After talking with Chuckles, I believe this is exactly correct.

Does non-variable mean that school skills do not count the "any x" skill slots many schools allow?

Your "any X" skills from your Rank 1 school still count as school skills for that school.

I disagree.

"Character may elect to use this bonus to add on to one of the schools specific skills instead."
Implying their are "school skills" and non school skills.
This view helps balance up the ikoma..

I agree with michutsujo

Ah the old Ronin warrior debate.
I don't see why if I assign the "Any High skill" from the Kakita Bushi to be "Lore: History" why I can then NOT assign the "Any High or Bugei skill" to the Lore: History.
Basically, you might be able to assign "any X" skill ranks to other applicable "any x" skill ranks.

Thats a side issue to my concern.
That section and the previous section on page 87 both consistently refer to "specific" skills related to a school thus posing a distinction between the skills you are required to take and the 'any x' skills. I am arguing based on the 'specific skills' distinction that the specific skills are the school skills and any x skills are NOT school skills.

The opposite is true. Page 93 defines School Skills as all of the Skills provided by your School, specifically including choice Skills. My reasoning is that ALL High and Bugei Skills are School Skills of the Kakita Bushi School, since the School offers (and therefore teaches) all of them. However, an individual student only has so much time to study with them, and thus only gets to choose a certain number.
To that student, the Skills he did not choose are not School Skills, because he learned them elsewhere (if at all). His choice of Artisan: Ikebana does count as a School Skill and any Techniques he learned at the School that specifically benefit his School Skills (N/A for Kakita) will of course benefit his Artisan Skill that he learned at his School.
Because the School Skills of one School are not affected by the Techniques of another School, it is simply necessary to define what School Skills are for Advanced Schools. I propose that all required Skills are School Skills for an Advanced School. That is a smaller list than basic Schools get, but it is still always at least 3 or 4 Skills. In the case of the Student of the Ruby Dojo, all of their relevant Skills are required and therefore benefit from their Rank 2 Technique if that's how we define Advanced School Skills. I think that this is the only way that will consistently make sense, as a Yasuki Courtier who becomes a magistrate and joins the school could otherwise ending up utilizing his magistrate training to benefit his Commerce, Stealth, and Poison rolls.

I support Hiruma Gacho. School specific can be read as "of this school only". In my opinion, this was meant to encompass all the 7 standard skills, even the ones that are left to decide by the player. That these skills are undetermined (to allow flexibility to the player) doesn't make them less school specific IMHO. You'll also note that what we call school skills are the skills listed in the entry "skills" of each school, and these do not separate named skills from unnamed skills (any X skill). They're all in the same entry, thus if some are so-called school skills, all of them are.
Hiruma Gacho's proposal for advanced schools makes a lot of sense to me.

I defer to the specific reference made by page 93.
That page reference fills me with hate.
Notheless it's RAWNESS stands above all wisdom and sanity.

P93 seems to agree with me that school skills are indeed the whole package, including "any X skill", since it's asked of the player to note them as such in case of later use by a tech.

This is correct and why the Spymaster is such a pain. However, just because the school says "any high skill" it does NOT make every high skill "school skills". It only makes the high skill chosen by the character into a school skill.

On this we are in agreement.
