Shosuro Duelist? Rank 1: Would they be in full defense when in Iajutsu combat?
Rank 4: Can they make this roll to avoid the first strike?

Re: Shosuro Duelist? Rank 1: Would they be in full defense when in Iajutsu combat?
No. Duels are not skirmishes and you do not have a stance in a duel.
EVEN if they were on Full Defense. The bonus to their TN to be Hit would not apply in the duel as only 5 + Amror + focus apply your TN to be Hit in a duel.
Rank 4: Can they make this roll to avoid the first strike?
Yes. It’s bitchy and thanks to the Rank 1 tech giving them +4k4 on the roll, they likely will win it. Remember though if the Shinobi waits to long the opponent is going to get +5 to their strike roll for each time they focused. S usually Rank 4 Shinobi just calls Strike immediately giving the opponent at more 1 focus.
Also, if a Rank 2 Shinobi takes Great Potential: Iaijutsu, they get two free raises to Focus (+10 to he roll) which is crazy good.

Thanks, the PC's on Saturday are going to be travelling through Scorpion Lands escorting Ichiro (Kuons kid) to Unicorn Lands. Hijinks are to ensue. I wanted a good Scorpion duelist, cheesy underhanded tactics acceptable... :)

Shosuro Shinobi Rank 2
Great Potential: Iaijutsu
Excellent quality Katana (Free Raise all the time)
Rank 5 Iaijutsu
= +20 to focus rolls.
Adding in Shosuro Shinobi Rank 4 is just overkill.

The PC is a rank 5 Kakita Duelist with GP: Iajutsu and 10 Iajutsu. So Rank 4 might not even be overkill.. :)

What is the Kakita’s Void, Agility, and Reflexes?
I assume the Shinobi is going to have PH 0.

No. Duels are not skirmishes and you do not have a stance in a duel.
So 'show me your stance' duels end in an infinite wait time because you can't have a stance in a duel ;)

0? Probably 1. It's awfully hard to stay at zero. He has 5 reflexes, 4 in agility, void I think.
The Shinobi would probably have 4,3,3 for his stats. 5 Iajutsu. 5 Stealth. So 8k3+5 for focus's, and 13k8+5 for his stealth roll to avoid.

Sorry.
You do not have a Posture is a duel.

Technically the Shinobi's Rank 4 tech does not work in a duel either, because since it is not a skirmish there are no rounds and the technique can only be used "Once per round"

Ronin Duelist rank 2, Taking the Measure: "Every round spent focusing in a duel..."
They're not combat rounds, but there are rounds in a duel. I really wish the RAW would specifically differentiate between the two though. The Ronin Duelist tech obviously should be usable in a duel, the Shinobi tech IMO shouldn't be.

I don't think the "round" thing is intentionaly confusing.
You just have to be able to read the writer's mind. :)
In context of a duel, "Round" is very intuitive- I focus, you foucus=1 round. But it breaks down because you use the same word that has an exact definition.
So when is a round not a round? If a duel does not have a Round (I'll capitalize for the skirmish round) that leaves many schools in the cold when it comes to duels. Was this the intent? Should a non-duelist have a chance of using their techs against a Duelist in a duel? If so, are there any "broken" Schools that unintentionaly crank out better duelists than a Dueling school?

Without calling anything "broken", there are *many* Techniques that give benefits and advantages that are more useful in a duel than what the Kakita Bushi get from their School. I used to rule that any Tech that didn't specifically say it could be used in a duel couldn't be - I've reconsidered this because there are a number I feel should be available that wouldn't be with that ruling, but it was effective in a crude way.

Unless otherwise specified(as the Ronin duelist specifies that they are rounds spent focusing in a duel) we need to assume that whenever the word round is mentioned it refers to "The Combat Round."

So are you saying that after some mook says "Strike" in a duel the striker gets his full # of attacks, then the loser gets to go?
So even if the Miromote aren't inherent dueling machines, you do NOT want to lose that iaijutsu roll to those guys...
