Two Weapon Fighting
Two Weapon Fighting (Search Tags: Two-Weapon Fighting, Duel Wielding, Mirumoto) *** Using two weapons in L5R never gives you an Extra Attack. The penalties for having two weapons are as follows: +5 TN penalty for HOLDING any item in one hand while fighting with a weapon in the other. +5 TN penalty for using a weapon in your off hand. Thus, if you hold a knife in each hand, the knife in your right hand is at +5 TN penalty to attack and the knife in your left hand is at +10 TN penalty to attack. Even if you are just HOLDING a knife (or even a scroll) in your off hand, you main hand attack roll has a +5 TN penalty. If you are fighting with a weapon in your off hand and have nothing in your main hand, your attack has a +5 TN penalty. THIS is the penalty that Ambidextrous negates. If you are holding two knives and simply use your first attack in the round to attack with your main hand, you only get +5 penalty for holding a weapon if your off hand. Then later if you attack with off hand knife, you get a +5 penalty for holding a weapon in your other hand and another +5 penalty for fighting with a weapon in you off hand. Ambidextrous does NOT negate the penalty for +5 TN penalty for “fighting with” two weapons. It only negates the off hand penalties. Mirumoto do not suffer the +5 penalty for carrying two weapons while using a daisho and Ambidextrous costs less for Dragon characters. All characters holding a wakizashi or kama in their off hand ignore the +5 penalty for carrying a weapon in their off hand per the special rules for wakisashi and kama. They do not ignore the +5 to attack penalty for attacking with their off hand if they attack with their of wakizashi or kama in their off hand. Attacking with pair kama does an additional +1k1 damage. Character need not actually make an attack roll with their off hand, nor are they requires to make two attacks. Simply fighting with paired kama provides this benefit. The Rank 5 Warfan Mastery Ability removes the +5 penalty for carrying a item in the off hand as long as that item is a Warfan. The Rank 5 Knives Mastery ability removes both the +5 penalty for carrying a weapon in your off hand and then +5 attack penalty for attacking with an off hand weapon while the character wields two knives. The Jo Emphasis for Staves removes both the +5 penalty for carrying a weapon in your off hand and then +5 attack penalty for attacking with an off hand weapon while the character wields two Jo. *** Many GMs allow a character using two weapons to gain a Free Raise that can only be used for the Extra Attack Maneuver and then requires the second roll of the Extra attack Manuver to use the skill, bonuses and damage of the off hand weapon. However, without the Ambidextrous Advanatge, any attacks with that off hand weapon will be at +5 TN and thus negate the benefit of the Free Raise. Also, unless the weapon is a wakizashi, kama, knife, or in some cases a warfan, the character will suffer a +5 to hit with his primary hand and thus negate the Free raise making the whole thing pointless.
