The Premise

After running several Winter Court table top L5R games and two play by post L5R Tournament of Thunder games, I have been wanting to put the lessens of those games into practice with a new game.

Instead of making it a bushi skirmish tournament where partipation drops off greatly as players are eliminated from the tourney, or making it some sort of epic 4 character month long Winter Court, I think a short festival over a character week with each character day being one IRL week per the format of the Tourneant of Thunder games would work well.

The big difference is content. While I like the idea of having a combat lab bushi skirmish tourney as one of the events of the festival, having a dueling competition, sumo competition, poetry competition, and other competitions as well as just free form RP would be fun.

The REAL difference is that I’d like players to play exhibitors. Yasuki Merchants, Doji favor dealers, Kakita Artisans, ect. The more player derived content then less work on the GMs. That is where this forum comes in.

If you are interested in playing a character who it hosting events at the festival or in any other way wish to contribute, please register on this forum and post any ideas you have.

Would this be a religious festival, by any chance? What would be the place of shugenja or monks?

The nature of the festival has not been determined.

okay a couple questions

1. How many people do you expect to GM over?

it sounds like a game of pure courtiers and maybe shugenja. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not but what I do know is that the bushi will want to compete so you will probably have to run all these events that you're talking about (with who knows how many people actually able to compete in each one). The other option of course is simply to ban the bushi and let the courtiers play--but then you've got a forum full of wheelers and dealers and little to nothing for them to wheel and deal over.

1a. will you allow npc yojimbo?

this of course would allow the player to have his cake and eat it too. their principle courtier character could play on the sidelines while the bushi yojimbo actually participate in the events (provided you actually run them). Which of course would create a bigger mess

2. what insight rank will you be aiming for?

3. will you allow spider PCs in any fashion?

I ask now because I obviously like spider and the spider clan as a whole tend to be a massive can of worms in most cases (with the latest winter court game banning them outright)...still I'd like to try again with our evil brethren.

3a. what about taint?

pure spider has been tried and its not fun (pre-MoC anyway) the newer schools fix this somewhat but still--taint is the spider's bread and butter for the majority of the really interesting schools and to try spider without taint knocks out about half their already sub-par list

4. any schools/books/online supplements specifically banned?

goes without saying but I'm going to play a heavy elite one of these days...

more as I think of them

I'd be interested in playing in and sponsoring an event for this pbp game.

Hi to everyone. I'm a new member and more of a player than a GM, but I have experience assisting GM's with stories.

I am interested in running some Crab-related events. Most have a PG rating and relatively safe-for-work. One idea I have is somewhat.... mature and decidedly morbid however.

So what schools and/or Insight ranks are allowed?

Sure, what the hell, I'll play a character (most likely a monk of some form) and sponsor a religious/philosophy type event, if I understood correctly the way you want to do this.

Would be more then happy to help run the game, and start up some hype if you want. As for ideas:

1. You should really determine how many players you are looking as a goal of having in this kind of game. As it is tournement based, and highly player driven, you may want to look into having many, many players, and having different GM's for each event(If they are going to happen simultaeneously.), or have anywhere from 10-15 players and run it yourself. Now this way would make you more of a moderator, and rules lawyer, but hey, it's workable, and free handed.

2. What is the basis of the tournament? Emperor's challenge, free form exhibition, or possibly a local daimyo holding a competition for positions. Either way, there has to be some goal for players to want to acheive through this tournament. Personally, I wouldn't mind doing something like a non-cannonized, tournament for the Emporer's Adjuncts, (Chancellor, Treasurer, Bodyguard, Voice, Shogun, etc...) as this would generate a lot of buzz, and formulate a great arching plot, with a massive amount of player driven plot on the side.

3. When do you plan on running this game? This one is pretty self explanatory. <.<

If you need actual ideas for your game, or some help in running it, I'd love to assist you. Also PM me, or Email me, and I'll drop you a few plot hooks I've had cooking for some time now. Razz

EDIT: Also, what rank are you wanting people to start out at?

Heh *Scratches head* That's pretty important too... <.<

I expect the get around 32 to 50 total participants based on the last two that I ran with about 16-24 being very active and 8-16 not being very active posters.

This is not going to be a court, but a festival. I’d like to have a bushi skirmish tournament and a Iaijutsu dueling tournament.

It depends. I allowed player to have NPCs last time via the Allies advantage and with the exception of one, it worked okay. In general, I’d prefer a PC Yojimbo.

Between 2 and 4. The last two I ran started with the PCs having 100 XP.

Quote:

Only if they are in disguise and hiding and keeping a low key. If someone wants to play a character with a Spider School or even a Maho Tsukai, they can, but they better not get caught or the magistrates are going to hunt them down.

Yes, but I WILL be enforcing the control rules in 3ER.

No, but anything that I think need errata will get it; Hojuitsu’s Legacy, Ikoma Herald, ect. I DO ban the use of Multiple schools. You can take Paths and Advanced Schools, but you cannot take two schools unless you used a Path to get there. This keeps the combo madness down to a minimum and prevents me from having to say “no” to 20 character applications.

This is up for us to determine.

I’d like to run in it a few months from now. I’d like to get everything set up first so that there isn’t a huge lag between character submissions and the start of the game.

Sounds good Tsukaede-sama. Now, my ideas for the game. ^_^ Muahahaha

1. Time Frame, and possibility of breaking away from cannon.
Everybody like to be in the lime light, and it is hard to make them into a 'mover and shaker' if they are working under the shadow of others. This is where things get tricky, IMO. In Pbp games you don't want people to be too powerful to undermine your plot, but you don't want them feeling weak in comparison to the world. As such, I like the Idea of using Cannon as a guideline, and interweaving the PC's into the cannon of my games.

As such I would suggest a modern timeframe, and possibly look at the 'Celetial Tounament' as a basis for the game. using cannon happenings to define it your own way. As AEG has yet to discribe the tournament in detail. This gives you some slack to make the game move how you'd like it to, while at the same time, appealing to those who like the cannonized events. It also givest he characters the feeling of being movers and shakers.

This should be used to draw out the Emperors new adjuncts and court officials. (You could even throw in a Topaz, and maybe Sapphire mini-tourney for the bushi/courtiers to participate in.)

more to come. ;)

I would be interested in playing also. I will admit that I have a hard time understanding what you are getting at here:

Are you saying that you want folks to play characters who are operating trading concessions, salons where the "movers and shakers" wheel and deal, run haiku competitions, etcetera?

Thanks for your time and attention.
